Lance Johnson is the CEO of Recurrent Ventures. He has more than 20 years of global business experience in media and technology as an investor and operator.
Previously he was the Head of Corporate Development of MIH Naspers in Silicon Valley, where he focused on group M&A activities and building portfolio-company relationships in the United States. MIH Holdings is the financial subsidiary of Naspers, the multimedia conglomerate listed in Johannesburg and London. The group’s principal interests are in pay-TV and internet platforms with significant operations in Africa, China, Russia, India, and Brazil. MIH’s businesses hold leading market positions including Tencent in China and mail.ru in Russia.
Prior to MIH Naspers, Lance was the Global Head of Sales & Marketing for the Nokia Interactive Advertising/Navteq Media Solutions in New York City, where he was responsible for driving mobile advertising growth with a dedicated mobile sales team of more than 125 globally (the largest such team at the time) with revenue of more than $75million. Lance also spearheaded efforts to subsidize through advertising Nokia Life Tools, a ground-breaking SMS-based information service that, provides essential health and education services to the rural poor in India, China, and Africa. Additionally, he served as a business consultant to Viacom and Amdocs, as well as an angel investor and adviser to startups such as Tappp and Vserv. He started his career at Yahoo, where he held a variety of senior roles in sales, business development, and operations in Munich and London.
He has a bachelor’s degree in Economics (with honors) from Trinity University in Texas and completed further study at the University of Freiburg in Germany, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. He splits his time between Boulder, CO, New York, NY, and San Francisco, CA.
