Recurrent Hires Ryan Brown to Lead the Lifestyle Division and MEL Magazine
January 12, 2022 (New York, NY) — Recurrent Ventures announced today that Ryan Brown has been hired as General Manager of the Lifestyle Division.
Brown is a media and business development veteran with extensive experience working alongside editorial to develop diversified revenue streams. At Hearst, he spearheaded the acquisition of the Leaf Group’s content assets for Hearst (previously a joint venture), grew the foundational Commerce program for SFGate and the major metro papers, and supported overall revenue growth and diversification nationally. Prior to Hearst, Brown spent the better part of seven years at various permutations of Gawker/Fusion/Gizmodo Media—overseeing business development, content licensing, and one of the first and largest forays into affiliate marketing/commerce with Kinja Deals and The Inventory. For this work, he was recognized as a Digiday Changemaker in 2018.
As he works alongside MEL co-founder and Editor-in-Chief Josh Schollmeyer and Executive Editor Lindsay Schrupp, Brown will be responsible for the day-to-day business operations, brand extensions, monetization structure, and the exploration of new ways of growing MEL’s unique voice. He will also be overseeing the growth of the Lifestyle Division as Recurrent adds brands to this vertical.
“We wanted to take our time finding the right GM for this division because we want to give MEL the support it deserves, but we will also be adding more brands to the Lifestyle division this year,” says Recurrent CEO Lance Johnson. “Our General Managers are integral to the growth and success of our verticals, and our media portfolio could not operate as well as it does without them. Given Ryan’s track record of success and deep understanding of the media industry, I’m completely confident that he is the right person for this role.”
“I’ve been a fan of Josh and MEL since the beginning, and have spent years trying to find the right way to work with this team and their unique vision,” says Brown. “Finally, at Recurrent we have the resources and the support to make that happen. This is a massive opportunity for our team. It’s going to be a big year for all of us, and we’re only just getting started.”
Brown joins Recurrent’s team of General Managers, which includes Tracy Cho, John Coyne, Jason Lepore, and Adam Morath. Cho and Coyne joined Recurrent as General Managers of Domino and BobVila.com, respectively. Lepore joined the company as part of the integration team before he was named GM of Automotive, Military, and Defense in December 2021. Morath was named GM of the Science, Tech, and Outdoor in August when he joined the company from Verizon Media.
